July 2024 BC-PHCRN Update

Wishing you all a wonderful summer ahead! Below we outline Network research progress, upcoming events and news from our partners, and news from the Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN).

Research Activity Updates

Recruitment: SPIDER (Structured Process Informed by Data, Evidence and Research) – A research and quality improvement collaboration supporting practices in improving care for complex older patients with polypharmacy

Recruitment of primary care practices for SPIDER is ongoing! If you are interested in participating, or to learn more about this study, please contact the Research Lead, Dr. Rubee Dev (rubee.dev@ubc.ca) or the Research Coordinator, Lanting Cheng (lanting.cheng@ubc.ca) or the Network Manager, Shelby Elkes (shelby.elkes@ubc.ca).

SPIDER is a pan-Canadian quality improvement project that focuses on the risk polypharmacy poses to older adults (aged 65 years and older on 10+ unique medications) and the corresponding impact it has on the health care system in Canada. The study uses a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of SPIDER compared to usual care, in reducing potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs). The BC-PHCRN is looking to recruit 14 practices and a proportion of their patients.

There is NO COST to you, and you will earn up to 16.5 MainPro+ credits. Please see the study website for more information.

Recruitment: UBC Innovation Support Unit BC Team-based Primary Care Evaluation

The Innovation Support Unit (ISU) improves the health of British Columbians by supporting innovation and improvement in primary care. This is accomplished by collaborating with primary care programs and projects in our province and by connecting academic knowledge and our faculty with these projects.

The ISU team has started recruiting for their Team Based Care (TBC) Evaluation, hosted on behalf of the Ministry of Health. They are currently looking for recommendations of mature, high functioning clinical teams that want to participate!

If you know of any BC TBC teams that might like to participate in an evaluation, please send them this link for more information!

Recruitment: CanTreatCOVID British Columbia

The Canadian Adaptive Platform Trial of Treatments for COVID in Community Settings (CanTreatCOVID) is evaluating the short- and long-term effectiveness of existing and new COVID-19 treatments for non-hospitalized patients using an adaptive platform trial study design. It will provide rapid evidence to guide clinical, health system, and public health decision making and planning.

The study is open to adults aged 19-49 years with one or more chronic condition(s) OR adults aged 50+ years, and who have tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms starting within the last five days. All study activities are done remotely.

Recruitment: Research Study on Compensating Patient Partners in Health Research in Canada

The Centre for Research and Integrated Care (CRIC), New Brunswick’s Practice-based Research and Learning Network (PBRLN), is inviting academic health researchers to participate in a virtual focus group or interview on compensation-related barriers and facilitators to patient engagement. Researchers want to hear from a wide range of individuals on what works and what does not for compensating patient research partners, and how this affects equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Please see flyer for additional details.

Knowledge Translation: OECD Patient Reported Indicator Survey (PaRIS)

Our Network has been meeting with participating clinics over the past month to review patient experiences and share the data through feedback reports. Led by Dr. Rubee Dev and Dr. Sabrina Wong in British Columbia, OECD PaRIS is an international and pan-Canadian initiative developing, standardizing and implementing a new generation of indicators of patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for primary care.

The Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN) hosted a Learning Series webinar focused on lessons learned about engagement from the OECD PaRIS project. If you are interested in hearing about our experiences with the OECD PaRIS project across Canada, we welcome you to watch the recording or view the slides.

Events

CPCRN Learning Series 2: Promising Policies for Advancing Access to Primary Care

Canada is facing a primary care access crisis across all provinces and territories. Survey data suggest that 1 in 5 people living in Canada do not have access to a regular source of primary care and members of the public identify accessibility as a challenge across jurisdictions. Policymakers across the country have taken various approaches to connect people to needed primary care, to support patients in navigating primary care services, and to meet the immediate needs of unattached patients waiting for a regular place of care. This learning series brought together researchers and policymakers from multiple jurisdictions to learn from research evidence alongside cross-jurisdictional policy experience, with the goal of identifying promising strategies and addressing shared challenges in advancing access to primary care in Canada.

Public experiences and perspectives of primary care in Canada: results from a cross-sectional survey

This is the first scientific publication from OurCare. It does a deep dive into results from OurCare’s national survey, pulling from 9,300 Canadians. Several CPCRN researchers are authors on the paper.

Describing primary care patterns before and during the COVID-19 pandemic across Canada: a quasi-experimental pre-post design cohort study using national practice-based research network data.

The objective was to analyse how the pandemic affected primary care access and comprehensiveness in chronic disease management by comparing primary care patterns before and during the early COVID-19 pandemic.

Land Acknowledgement Resources

Being a network of networks spanning what we now call Canada, the CPCRN is committed to developing resources acknowledging the land which we’re grateful to be on. This resource was developed and shared across all Networks, encouraging members to continue reflecting and putting into action their own personalized acknowledgments. Register for the CPCRN Primary Care Learning Cycle – November 18-19, 2024

We are excited to share registration and hotel links for our Primary Care Learning Cycle for this November in Quebec City, just before the NAPCRG Conference. There is NO cost to attend.

The goals of the Primary Care Learning Cycle are:

  • To co-design an action plan that aligns the work of CPCRN with an essential part of a primary care learning health system.
  • To engage network members and allies in a series of sprints to move us closer to embedding applied research and evidence supports in care delivery.
  • To bring our diverse partners together to network and learn from each other.

We hope to see many of you there! See details and register at this link.

Book your Hilton hotel room here.

Please reach out to our Administrative Coordinator, Manuela Beeckmans at admin@cpcrn-rcrsp.ca if you have any questions.
