SPIDER: Improving Care for Complex Older Patients with Polypharmacy

BC: Rubee Dev

Please describe your research project and how it contributes to improving primary care

SPIDER (A Structured Process Informed by Data, Evidence and Research) is a research and quality improvement (QI) collaboration supporting practices in improving care for elderly patients. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of SPIDER, a multi-pronged approach, compared to usual care in reducing potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) prescribed to patients aged 65+ years on 10+ medications. Pending on results, SPIDER could be applied to other challenges faced by patients, primary health care teams and Canadian health systems.

How will the results of this initiative be shared with stakeholder groups (i.e. clinicians, policy makers, patients)?

SPIDER follows an integrated knowledge translation approach, which means we have engaged several knowledge users including primary care practitioners, other health professionals, health planners, and individuals with lived experience during the development of this study. Results will be disseminated at annual Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN) team meetings held around scientific conferences, which include researchers, patients, health professionals and policy makers.
