This discussion paper from the BC Nurse Practitioners Association describes a new primary health care model that encourages a focus on place-based, multidisciplinary teams, shared governance, and care that is developed with and wrapped around patients. Incorporated within this discussion paper is a funding strategy proposal that has the potential to immediately place the NP workforce in a strong position to support the Ministry of Health’s goal to ensure all citizens have a primary care provider within a revitalized health care system. Focusing on underserved citizens, families and communities, the broad goal of the BCNPA primary health care model is to work towards increasing attachment to a consistent primary care provider for citizens who have difficulties accessing a provider and improving appropriate access to care when needed.
